Barro Colorado Nature MonumentPanama Canal, Panama
Longitude: 80º 9' W
Latitude: 9º 9' N
Estimated date of visit: 12/06/03
Barro Colorado Island, is located in the Panama Canal. It is the largest island (3,707 acres) in Lake Gatun, Panama Canal. In 1923, in response to a request by a group of scientists, the former Governor of the Canal Zone designated Barro Colorado as a biological reserve.

The island now has an international reputation as the leading field station for studies of tropical biology.

Its excellent location gives researchers easy access to the Atlantic and Pacific oceans; the isthmus is geologically recent and is biologically important because it served as a bridge to facilitate the interchange of biota between North and South America, and served as a barrier to some marine organisms.

Question: why is surf important geologically?
Answer: The surf and how waves break and move is a result of the underwater geography. By observing the waves we can determine a lot about what is underneath the surface. Also, the surf is a carving tool of Mother Nature. As the waves go in and out the wash things on shore while they erode away the shore. Different types of rocks erode at different rates.  If the ocean is eroding away a shoreline of different type of rocks you will get interesting structures and colors as a result. Also, if there is an earthquake in the middle of the ocean, this will effect the surf on the shoreline. Tremors in the middle of the ocean can cause tidal waves, that can also affect the shorelines, permanently altering it.

Question: Nick, how many rest days do you guys get and how often? what is one place you are not looking forward to going to? when you get Parkinson's what are somethings they cant do that people with out parkinons cant do? please answer back to chris_hauk@upland.k12.CA.us
Answer: Sara, we try to schedule at least 2 days a week, more like 3. However, if we get behind schedule we often have to drive hard in order to catch up. While driving south we have had to meet a number of boats, we have to be on time for these meetings. In these cases we have to do whatever it takes to catch up, some times we have to drive four several days without taking a break.
I am looking forward to going every  place, you can always learn new things regardless of hoe difficult it is to travel there.
When people get  Parkinson's disease, they often can't do things as quickly as other people and they often times have balance problems. I talked to one fellow that told me his doctor said he couldn't ride horses anymore.  Also, people with Parkinson's disease lose there ability to control certain muscles, turning a small screw or threading a needle becomes more difficult.

Answer: Teotihaucan was the most interesting place. It was really neat to see these buildings were over 1000 years old.
No one has been ill yet, besides colds and some intestinal discomfort.
It is always a challenge to drive with the same people for that long. Sometimes you love them, sometimes you hate them, but most often they just crack you up.

Answer: This trip is much different then the last. It is hard to compare them.
Parkinson's Disease is a disease that affects communication between the brain and the body. Often times it makes people shake uncontrollably.
Unfortunately we did not see Popocatepetl. Fuego is smaller than Popocatepetl, but both are active volcanoes. Popocatelpetl had a large eruption in the year 2000.

Please Email Me Back at Chris_Hauk2@Upland.k12.ca.us Thanks

Answer: All the countries we have traveled in have been Spanish Speaking. WE are all learning Spanish very quickly. If we can't understand we can point a lot.
It is difficult to remember what money is worth a lot. How much to the dollar. However, in El Salvador, Panama and Ecuador we have used US dollars so that makes things easier.
We had two flat tires and have bent to rims in a driving mishap. However, we fixed them and we are still looking for a place that can straighten the rims.

Question: How are you guys going through the whole trip without a lot of privacy? What are you guys going to do during the time that your cars are being shipped by a boat? How did you like drinking tequila at Tequila? What do you think that the main reason of Parkinson Disease is? Please e-mail at Chris_hauk@upland.k12.ca.us

Answer: It is not easy without any privacy. We all have times of going off alone which is important. We all knew it would be like this, so we mentally prepared ourselves before we left.
We have been catching up on our work and part of the group took off the Caribbean.
We enjoyed trying the Tequila. One of the greatest joys of traveling is that you can try all sorts of new things.
I am really not sure what the main cause of Parkinson's is, but I hope scientists find out soon.
